Summer at Gage
In summer 2006 I took
advantage of the Gage's drop-in figure studios; these drawings are each the
result of attending one long pose session. As I worked on the drawings, I
asked myself what circumstance or scenario would explain the pose. The
doggerel verse that accompanies the drawing is the response to that
question. To give the project momentum, I finished each drawing and verse
before the next session. The final element was the inclusion of a small
woodcut print echoing some theme or design element present in the drawing.

Tiresias Milo Duke graphite and relief print on paper, 18" x 24" |
Tiresias
What sort of ghastly Greekish play explains the pose you took today? Are you Tiresias and staff; Socrates played for a laugh; maybe some Boeotian buffoon whose grim demise is coming soon? Your death will be a tragic joke; no one will drape your corpse with cloak. Not because you lack a friend, but you were naked at the end. |
