THE BOOK OF STONES

The Philosopher's Stone

General Kwan Kung
Sits on a rock,
He sits on a rock
In his flying garden of stone.
The thousand eyed general
Sits on a rock,
He sits on a rock,
But he is not quite alone.
Down on the ground
A lizard is near,
One that is dear,
To make it seem more like home.

Tanuki and Tenjin

Tenjin says:
You need not look,
the Tao
is everywhere.
It's in
the flaming sky,
and in
your underwear.

Tanuki says:
That's fine for you, Master,
but not so for me.
I make paintings
and write poetry.
Finding the Tao
is not my aim;
I'd much rather have
a fortune and fame.

Doggerel with Buddha Nature

Many lifetimes lived and died
Within a compass pre-inscribed.
Taught how to sit and where to stand
By ancient habits of the land.
Until the soul within awoke
And threw off the social yoke.
Stepped above and stood aside,
Buddha nature not denied.
This Noble Truth is plain to see:
A Buddha's lifetime must be free.

Step softly monkey

Tread too hard
and there will be
accelerations due
to gravity

Maya is as Maya does

Beware, beware
Of flying imps and kitchenware,
Of drunken badger priests
Who die to save the moon,
And the kind of science that
Proclaims the truth too soon.

Daruma dreamt a dream that never was,
And passed beyond the wall.
The dream he dreamt was small enough
To encompass all.
